Matías Urzúa
I’m a Chilean-American Composer and Audio Engineer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. My entire ethos is rooted in the belief that everything you learn is an extension of something else. Composing, recording, and mixing are simply different ways of approaching music from different perspectives. As a result, my work spans a wide range of genres, from orchestral writing to recording metal bands.
This way of thinking comes directly from how I grew up. I was raised between countries, too fair-skinned to be considered Latino and too foreign to be considered American. For most of my life, my identity felt like it lived in everyone else’s mouth but my own. That experience left me with a deep resistance to being pigeonholed into a single thing, and a strong desire to tell people’s stories through music.
I believe deeply in music’s ability to tell a person’s story. Music is how I learned to make sense of myself, and it’s the language I use to help others do the same.
I'm lucky to be working at the intersection between art and technology, serving music from different angles. I'm currently contracted at Apple helping with the development of spatial audio tools, while still composing music and working with independent bands as an engineer. I previously did a stent at Meta contributing to some VR games, Rayban Stories, and more.
